Dave Anderson & Mike Wingo,
Conversations
(independent, 2010)

Conversations consists of standards performed by the unusual combination of Dave Anderson on piano and Mike Wingo on percussion.

Anderson has a refined, piano-bar style that would not seem to work with percussion. Wingo also takes a restrained approach, however, staying in the background and always playing softly, mostly using hand drums. And he sits out on sections that do not call for him.

The 12 tunes here include two Anderson originals and standards by composers including Richard Rogers, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Duke Ellington.

The duo are skilled musicians, but they create such a laid-back atmosphere, the songs blend into each other after a while. That is OK, though. This is a CD you can drift along and relax with.
