Bobby Byrd & Johnny Byrd,
Lone Star Noir
(Akashic, 2019)

Some of the tales in the book Lone Star Noir were excellent!

And some made me go "HUH?!??"

I know I am rather old-school about narrative, and I typically do not care for the more experimental versions. This series of stories, edited by father-son team Bobby Byrd and Johnny Byrd, has a mix of techniques at play, which can be rather interesting. Overall, though, it tends to confirm my personal biases about narrative styles.

Among the 14 contributors to the collection are Joe R. Lansdale, James Crumley, Lisa Sandlin, David Corbett, Luis Alberto Urrea, Sarah Cortez, Milton T. Burton and Jessica Powers.

I do tend to enjoy this series, which supplies noir-style stories based in various settings. This one, however, definitely has more hits than misses!
