Opening Night
at the Gaelic College of Arts & Crafts,
Festival Club, St. Ann's, Cape Breton (8 October 2011)

I love attending the Celtic Colours International Festival, but my most favorite part of the week-long event is the Festival Club at the Gaelic College of Arts & Crafts.

It is not for the weak-hearted, though. It begins at 11 p.m. and goes until 3 a.m. or later! However, even with the late hours, the music is sure to keep your heart pumping, and the band that did that for me on this night -- the first night of the festival -- was one that isn't even on the lineup this year.

The award-winning Prince Edward Island band Vishten just happened to be on Cape Breton Island for the weekend, and were people ever excited for that. The crowd went nuts over this band, and it's no wonder why. From the first note they played, they displayed an incredible energy to their music, and their performance was incredibly tight.

From lively jigs and reels to equally rousing French songs, they had every person in the room smiling from ear to ear. Their energy was infectious and it showed in the clapping of hands and tapping of toes. Vishten was definitely the highlight of the evening for me.
