various artists,
DJ's Choice: Celebrate St. Patrick's Day
(Turn Up the Music, 2001)

Sometimes, we listen to and review music to encourage people to listen. Sometimes, we urge people to stay away. This review provides the latter service.

There is so much good Irish music out there, it's amazing labels continue to output this crap. This is, I suppose, a "mix tape" of sorts for people who dye their beer green for St. Patrick's Day parties, but that has about as much to do with Irish culture as the Eiffel Tower and yaks.

This disc provides a selection of 10 hackneyed old saws, the likes of "Macnamara's Band" and "The Unicorn Song" -- neither of which is actually Irish -- and tired standbys including "Danny Boy" (English song nailed to an Irish tune) and "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" (American).

None of the musicians involved in this recording are identified -- for which I don't blame them, really -- and I can't say any of them sound actually Irish. Don't waste your money on this junk, which even at its bargain-basement price is too expensive. Support Irish music by buying Irish music, not recordings that think a green shamrock on the cover makes it authentic.
