Enter the Haggis,
Gutter Anthems
(United for Opportunity, 2009)

I have somehow managed to miss Enter the Haggis up until now. This is an error I am quite ready to rectify as soon as possible. Gutter Anthems is my kind of Celtic music, a blend of contemporary sounds with bagpipes and the traditional themes interwoven.

Gutter Anthems is 15 songs and one very generous hour's worth of solid music. My absolute favorites of the collection are "Bury My Demons," with a bass vocal solo that sends shivers up and down your spine; "The Death of Johnny Mooring," with hard-driving vocals, a predominant fiddle and a drum riff that will get you up on your feet; and "Murphy's Ashes," which opens up with a pipe solo backed by plangent guitar chords and a catchy piano run. The latter is also a great companion to the old classic, "Paddy Murphy."

Usually, there's one song I'll skip on a CD, but in this case, I can honestly say all 15 songs are well worth listening to. I've had the CD in my computer for a week now, and I will probably only replace it with Christmas music.
