Lowri Evans,
Kick the Sand
(Fflach, 2007)

Like our usual notion of a Welsh person, this young lady has music in her body, blood and bones. She started singing lessons at age 7 and has moved through choirs, musicals and bands to emerge here as a solo artist of great merit and talent.

This is her second solo album. The first was a Welsh language effort but now she reaches out to listeners without that facility with 11 songs -- all but one coming from her own pen.

The opener "Can't Decide" has a distinctly jazz feel and her voice is ideally suited to this type of delivery. The non-Lowri track is a beautifully modulated performance of U2's "With or Without You" with a simple backing that ideally augments the sweet innocent vocal.

We get one Welsh language track on the album but she also gives us the English translation on the final track as "Mountain Girl."

This is a quiet, relaxed album with no frill or frolic. The songs are well crafted and expertly delivered. The insert contains some wonderful photographs as well as the lyrics and credits.
