Kim Harrison,
Rachel Morgan #5: For a Few Demons More
(Eos, 2007)

Usually, I set aside time to read Kim Harrison novels in one sitting. I find a comfortable place and devour the book like dark chocolate -- savoring every page and not wanting the story to end.

This time, I put the book down and did something else ... more than once.

You'd think the plotlines would really grab my attention. Female weres are dying from apparent suicides, and the FIB cannot find their records. Rachel quickly realizes this is due to the Focus her alpha David has been hiding from the rest of the weres.

Newt, an insane female demon, has come to visit Rachel seeking the focus. Her visit causes the church partners Rachel, Ivy and Jenks live in to be de-sanctified, which makes it no longer safe for habitation. This isn't going to be an easy fix, either -- it's going to cost money that they don't have.

Also, Rachel's arch-rival, Trent Kalamack is getting married and she's been asked to play bridesmaid. The only reason she'd consider doing this is because Kalamack is paying her to be there -- as backup to his security.

There was a lot going on and most of it interesting. I think Harrison must have listened too well to the popular writer's advice, "show don't tell." Some of the narrative could have been chopped and kept the book moving faster.

Also, Harrison's hooks at the ends of chapters are not as barbed as the original books were. I still wanted to read, but it isn't irresistible like it used to be.

The characterization is still outstanding, even for new characters. Rachel is an interesting and dimensional woman who is doing her best to walk a tightrope between people she cares for. Jenks, who has always been my favorite character, is both a strong professional runner, despite his diminutive size, and a caring and loving father, who knows his short life will be over soon and must pass the torch.

There are some moments in this story that are hilarious. Trent's wedding in particular is one of the funniest scenes I have ever read. That one, I had to go back twice and re-read for the full impact.

Still, I'm approaching the next Rachel novel with caution. For a Few Demons More represents a low point in the series for me, and I will definitely read a sample of the next book before I purchase.
