Faith Hunter,
Rogue Mage #1: Bloodring
(Roc, 2006)

Thorn St. Croix has a secret that could get her killed. She's a neomage in an era when magic is licensed and carefully regulated. She's certain that if her human neighbors in Mineral City realize what she is, they'll stone her and chop her into little bits.

When Lucas, her cheating ex-husband, turns up missing, she's not too broken up -- until she realizes she could be the prime suspect. Worse, Lucas's first wife has control of the estate and her husband's only child's inheritance, and Thorn is pretty sure the woman's gotten mixed up in Dark Magic. When Thorn's stepdaughter sees a Daywalker, she's certain something very bad is happening in their area.

Then she discovers Lucas may also be the savior for their little town, Mineral City, which will be sold to the highest bidder rather than legally bespelled to keep the glaciers from encroaching. Oh, and the third wife is in cahoots with the people who want to buy the town from the residents for a song. Not only that, she's calling for seraphim to save her missing husband. That would not be good for Thorn -- a seraphim will not her as what she is and either kill her or send her back to the enclave.

With her home and the future of a kid she loves at stake, Thorn's got to use her all her skills as clandestinely as possible to find Lucas.

Fans of Sharon Shinn's angels and Esther Friesner's Song of Herod are going to love this book. Thorn's a strong, smart woman with a lot at stake. Bloodring is very well written and fast paced. Hunter took a lot of time creating her world and it shows. Excellent debut novel and I'm hoping there will be more books in this series.
