Ricki, the bear saved from a cage on Lincoln Highway, enjoys 'peace and tranquility' at her Colorado home

Ricki, the bear rescued in 2015 from a cage along the Lincoln Highway, is "doing very well" in her new home in Colorado.

The bear was rescued in February 2015 after living 16 years in a cramped habitat outside Jim Mack's ice cream parlor in Hellam Township, York County.

The bear's plight drew national attention in January, garnering tens of thousands of signatures on at least two online petitions and gaining support from comedian Ricky Gervais.

She was taken to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado after a lawsuit -- spearheaded by Lancaster residents Amanda Welling and Kelly Bennett, along with the Animal Legal Defense Fund and others -- made the case that Ricki was kept in cruel, unhealthy conditions, living alone in a 250-square-foot cage.

Now, she shares a sprawling 10-acre habitat with five other black bears. She is good friends with two other female bears, the sanctuary said on its Facebook page Sunday, and she likes to "forage, swim, and just enjoy the peace and tranquility" of the sanctuary as she lumbers around her 10-acre habitat.

The 720-acre sanctuary in Colorado has more than 150 rescued black, brown and grizzly bears, all of which came from "very severe confinement conditions," according to officials there.

Dozens of people who followed Ricki's plight or who were involved in her rescue were quick to respond with happy messages about the bear's situation.
