Holly Smale, I Know How This Ends (Mira Books, 2025)
She also moved back to her hometown of Bristol, England, where she can hang out with her small group of childhood friends. Which is good. But her parents recently retired and moved from the UK to Australia. Phone calls and text messages between them are fine, but it's clear that Margot misses seeing her folks in person. At least her grandfather still lives nearby. She's starting to worry about him, though, as he begins to show his age. And then, there's Margot's personal life. Months ago, she broke up with her long-time boyfriend after they had been together for 10 years. In order to find a possible new partner, she has relegated herself to the realm of online dating. This strategy is not going well. In fact, it's become utterly ridiculous. She's deciding to give up on the whole venture. Then she starts talking to Henry, the waiter at the Italian restaurant where she has always met her potential dates. Henry is an interesting person in his own right. Hmm. Suddenly, inexplicably, Margot starts experiencing strange seizures. She occasionally zones out of reality and "sees" a future scene with people she may or may not recognize. These episodes last a few minutes for her, but are only a few seconds long for anyone else who may be witnessing her quick distress. Are these premonitions? Will they really come true? Or are they just cases of wishful thinking gone haywire? She doesn't know -- (and neither do we) -- and she's reluctant to tell anyone about them. She's scared. Hence, the irony of the title of this book. Because Margot truly DOESN'T know what the future may hold -- for her, or for anyone within her circle of close family and friends. To say more would be to give away too much of the plot. Margot is an interesting and amusing character to follow. She's got a good attitude. She's got some good and interesting people around her. She could easily be someone that you want to know better. She tells her story in first person and in present tense, which means that she brings immediacy to every moment. If you want to escape your own reality for a couple of days, and you want to do it through the pages of a book, look for a copy of I Know How This Ends. Spend time with Margot the Meteorologist. Not only will she share her dating exasperations with you, but she'll also tell you all about the creations of clouds and rainbows. Who else could do this?
