Stomp Out Loud,
directed by Luke Creswell & Steve McNicholas
(Yes/No Productions, 1997)

Stomp Out Loud is a sequel video production created for HBO stemming from Stomp. If you are not familiar with Stomp, it is the art of creating sound from ordinary, everyday items; turning those sounds into a full percussion; and combining the percussion with dance, movement, and visual comedy.

Stomp broke box office records throughout the world. It also sold out off-Broadway performances for four years. It is safe to say that Stomp has a tremendous following.

Stomp Out Loud contains 50 minutes of new choreography that includes stage performances and works performed in ... and above ... the streets of New York. From the Brooklyn waterfront to the alleyways of Manhattan to the rooftops of Queens, the cast have created music from common items all around the city.

This video opens with the cast hanging from a billboard frame upon which the word "stomp" has been spelled with an assortment of junk. They perform some wild moves that will make the bungee jumpers sit up and take notes.

Next there's a trip in a pickup truck loaded with junk. The trip ends at a stage where the cast perform a cool number with push brooms.

We hear the card game upstairs, basketball game in the street, kitchen work, sewer pipes, rainfall and drumming on plastic and metal barrels, metal buckets, lunch pails and apples being eaten, sticks, keys, fire escape ladders, an elevator ride, and garbage can lid fighting. The final scene is a magnificent fade away of New York City and the city sounds.

The cast includes drummers, musicians, dancers, actors, and persons drawn to the rhythms of life. They are too numerous to list here.

This video amazes me. The cast are so talented, but they seem to be just ordinary people. It is amazing that they can bring these sounds together into such a beautiful arrangement. These pieces have depth and layering just like any normal musical composition. It is absolutely mindboggling!

The members of Stomp Out Loud hope it will help people to hear music in their daily lives where they've never heard the rhythm before -- to hear music in noise.

Stomp Out Loud is money well spent because you will want to watch this over and over. If you have kids, you probably need two copies because they'll want one for their very own.
