Blame It on the Bellboy, directed by Mark Herman (Hollywood Pictures, 1991)
Three men arrive at the Hotel Gabrielli in Venice. Melvyn Orton (Dudley Moore) is there to buy a villa for his ungrateful boss, Mr. Marshall. Maurice Horton (Richard Griffiths) is there to meet a woman from a dating service, even though he has a wife at home -- at least he believes she is at home. Mike Lawton (Bryan Brown) is a hitman there for a contract. When the bellboy (Bronson Pinchot) mixes up their messages, things get crazy for everyone concerned. Lawton gets the date packet and believes he is supposed to kill Patricia Fullord (Penelope Wilton), who, of course, believes he is her blind date. Horton meets the real estate agent, Caroline Wright (Patsy Kensit) and cannot believe she asks for money. She cannot believe he expects to sleep with her before they close the sale on the villa, but she really wants a speedboat in the worst way and can only afford it if she can sell him the villa. Orton gets nabbed by the mafia boss, Bettino Scarpa (Andreas Katsulas), who does not believe he is there to buy a villa. Now, everybody is in a mess and nobody can let anybody go without repercussions. Rosemary Horton (Alison Steadman) gets wind that her husband is cheating on her and suddenly appears ... while he is in the motel with Caroline. Scarpa cannot turn Orton loose because he knows too much. They believe Horton is the hitman. Scarpa orders Orton to kill Horton. If things were not funny enough before, they certainly are now. I am wondering if anybody will get out of this movie alive. I laughed and laughed -- almost constantly -- the first time I saw this film. I honestly believe this movie can make anyone laugh. The acting is over the top most of the time, though Fullord and Brown manage to pull off more low-key seriousness to keep the movie grounded. The photography is some of the best in the biz. They don't use any fancy or complicated techniques. Instead, they give you clean, clean coverage of all the action. It is flawless work. The scenery and sets are breathtaking! It makes you want to take a boat ride along the main canal and visit some of these gorgeous villas. Blame It on the Bellboy is an excellent comedy. It is a fantastic movie for unwinding after a rough day. It is maximum entertainment for the money.
