Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Four, Vol. 1 by Brian Buccellato & various artists (DC Comics, 2016)
Part of an ongoing series revisiting graphic novels and collected editions from days gone by....
Batman, who leads the resistance to Superman's reign, is running out of options. He turns to Ares, the Greek god of war, to involve the pantheon of Greek gods in a new attempt to stop Superman's takeover of the world. Meanwhile, Catwoman -- fed up with Batman's inaction -- leaves the insurgency's headquarters to return to Gotham, while Renee Montoya, drunk and suped-up on a kryptonite-fueled enhancement drug, takes on Superman himself in a suicide mission. And Harley Quinn is bored, turning first to Poison Ivy, then Billy Batson to try and find some entertainment. Barbara Gordon, who in this reality is still bound to a wheelchair as Oracle, undergoes an excruciating procedure designed by Lex Luthor -- who appears to be Superman's friend and ally but secretly works with Batman against him -- to restore her mobility and her mantle as Batgirl. Aquaman, however, remains cowed by Superman's earlier threats against Atlantis and refuses to lead the forces of the sea against him. It's grim days for the remaining heroes as the fourth volume of Injustice: Gods Among Us begins. The major issue this time around is the conflict between Superman's remaining Justice League members (and their new allies, such as Sinestro) and the gods of Olympus. Although Zeus himself doesn't seem to be taking a direct role in the fight, he allows a group led by the likes of Hermes and Hercules to take action against Superman's authoritarian alliance. Also taking a stand against Superman is the Amazon army of Themyscira, which puts Wonder Woman's loyalties to the test. And then Billy Batson returns, freed by Ares (who seems to be playing both sides of the conflict against each other). As Shazam, he has the strength of Hercules and can turn the tide of battle against Hercules himself. His story, however, ends on an almost literal cliffhanger, as the book ends and we must wait for the next volume to learn what happens next. Year Four, Vol. 1 offers some truly epic battles: Montoya vs. Superman, Wonder Woman vs. Superman, Hercules vs. Superman, Shazam vs. Hercules, and Batman vs. Robin foremost among them. The end of the series is in sight, although a few volumes still remain before its conclusion; I confess, I have no idea how it will end. But I'm pretty sure I'll enjoy the trip.
